Nestled within the chocolate-box village of Cumrew within the foothills of the Pennines, this former hayloft is a delightful retreat for families and small groups.

Studded on the cusp of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this charming property is ideally placed for exploring the surrounding countryside. There are many walks in the area, including Cardunneth Pike and Cumrew Fell - for those who like adventure. For those looking for a chilled out break, there is a quirky village library box, which has been lovingly restored from an old telephone box, just half a mile down the road. Just 6 miles from Cumrew is the wonderful Coombs wood, which is a haven for keen bikers and dog walkers alike - See if you can spot the stone carvings! Talkin Tarn country park is 6.5 miles, and has an abundance of trails for walkers of every level. The outdoor pool at Lazonby (7.9 miles) is a must visit for guests who arrive between April and September!

Further afield, Historic Penrith is within 17.5 miles, where you can investigate the castle ruins and enjoy local fare in one of the many eateries. A 12-mile drive will bring you to the city of Carlisle, a destination famed for its vibrant combination of historic architecture and contemporary array of bars, bistros and entertainment. For walkers, you’ll have plenty to amuse you from the comfort of your doorstep, but you’ll be within easy reach of the Lake District National Park, 22 miles away, and the Solway Coast at 29.5 miles away should you wish to venture further afield.

As it's name suggests, this former Hayloft is tucked above what is now the owner’s garage, this impressive property is perfectly tailored to groups of four guests. Park on the shared driveway and step inside to find the handy utility room with its washing machine, tumble dryer, sink and WC. Stairs lead up to the first floor where the remainder of the accommodation is situated, consisting of a spacious open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner and two bedrooms with en-suite facilities. Vaulted ceilings, timber beams and whitewashed stone walls add to the building’s old-world charm, and the entire room is kept warm by the wood burner. Two sofas and an armchair provide a restful spot for watching the TV/DVD, and the dining table has ample room for meals whilst listening to the CD/radio or iPod docking station. A stylish kitchenette will please any budding cook with its electric oven, hob, dishwasher, microwave, fridge with icebox compartment and low-level cabinetry. Light meals and simple snacks can be enjoyed perched on the useful breakfast bar, which has two stools and excellent views through the windows. From the lounge, the small landing space has seating and shelving with books and games for you to peruse, and there is a storage cupboard with drying space and useful items such as a stair gate, iron and ironing board. There’s a further hanging space concealed behind a curtain, and stairs leading down to the enclosed courtyard. Next, the attractive twin bedroom has two single beds, bedroom furniture and an en-suite Jack and Jill en-suite which can also be accessed from the hall. Consisting of a shower over the bath and WC, it is stylish and comfortable for a refreshing soak. Next, the double bedroom has a super-king-size bed, bedroom furniture and an en-suite shower room with a shower and WC.

Outside there is a private courtyard and an enclosed walled garden with seating. You are welcome to use the tennis court and walled garden at leisure, and the friendly owners maintain a vegetable patch with seasonal offerings to sample.

We had a lovely stay in the hayloft! It was so clean an comfortable. We enjoyed being able to travel to Scotland and Windermere. We also enjoyed some of the walks around the area although pup was obsessed with the pheasants on Kates Woods. Aira force was a lovely visit and there was a walk to the next village. It was awesome. Perfectly appointed with everything one could wish for. Loads of space and comfort. The beds are amazing. All equipment to play in the garden and tennis on the court was provided. We walked and cycled from the Hayloft and it was magnificent. There are several pubs within 3-5 miles for meals out. The hosts are lovely. Loved it.
