Combe Thatch Cottage

Cottage location

Gittisham, Nr Honiton, Devon, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

This has to be the quintessential Devon cottage for two, a cream-coloured affair, tucked away down a quiet lane in the picture postcard village of Gittisham. The village itself is surrounded by glorious buttercup meadows, winding lanes and lush green countryside.

Combe Thatch Cottage is, without doubt, a rural idyll. But owners Ruth and Ken Hunt have also ensured that it will turn on the townies. There’s a fabulous huge creamy 10ft Aga in the Conran kitchen, a wood burning stove, a Fired Earth copper bath (double-ended, of course) and a huge, soft white bed overlooking the private walled garden. A couple can enjoy a blissfully romantic break here, waking to the sounds of church bells, birdsong and the village ducks and geese. Breakfast in the garden could be followed by a long walk with an OS map, a potter around Britain’s best farm shop (twenty minutes away), or a short drive to the south west coastal path between Exmouth and Lyme Regis.

Behind Combe Cottage, the mile-long drive to the Hunt’s Combe House Hotel begins. Guests at the Cottage can either cook for themselves, book on a B&B basis, taking breakfasts up at the hotel or arrange for a hamper to be delivered each morning. Evening meals in its award-winning restaurant are not to be missed and for special occasions, a Combe House chef can create a romantic candlelit dinner for two in the Cottage.

Accommodation

The original cottage features have been enhanced and embellished with contemporary furnishings in shades of natural linen and limestone, complimented throughout by carefully placed fine antiques and fresh flowers. It is all very light and tasteful, yet comfortable and homely at the same time. There are pale grey wooden units in the kitchen, two big sofas in the living area, and a touch of whimsy in the Richard Adams paintings on the walls.

The double bedroom matches any first rate hotel for style and attention to detail, with its crucial trading sisal carpet, painted shutters, extra wide ‘love chair’ and flat screen TV (there’s another downstairs).

However, it’s the garden that gives this cottage real wow factor - an extraordinarily generous lawn flanked with mature trees, wisteria-covered walls and cottage garden planting. Deckchairs, a bench, a barbecue, croquet set and a table and chairs make this a decidedly decadent experience for two.

Facilities

These include a DVD and CD player, 10ft Aga, gas and electric, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer.

Dogs are welcome downstairs and in the garden, and even have their own sleeping quarters in the vestibule just off the kitchen.
