1A Uplands

Cottage location

Thorpeness, Nr Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

The trendy Suffolk heritage coast has become highly desirable holiday and second home territory in the last few years. Beach lovers, writers, artists, families, walkers, cyclists and musicians have all fallen in love with this magnificent stretch of East Anglian shoreline.

1A Uplands is a sweet and stylish wooden cottage for two on a quiet country track, less than five minutes’ walk from the beach in the village of Thorpeness. It has an open plan living and dining area with a wood burning stove, a kitchen, a pretty blue and white-tiled bathroom and a contemporary double bedroom. The front garden is big enough for badminton, while at the back there’s a wooden deck area with sofa seating and a table and chairs.

Thorpeness was built in the 1920s with holidaymakers in mind, and has an eclectic mix of architectural styles. Its simplicity and brightly-painted clapboard houses are built to enjoy the best of seaside living, with many a balcony, deck or mooring jetty overlooking either the waves or the rowing boats, punts, dinghies and canoes on the Meare boating lake. The village has a well-stocked shop, a gastro pub with WiFi, the Beach House Cafe, a country club which offers temporary membership (tennis etc), a tea-room and a highly recommended golf club. Various walks and cycle rides, up and down the coast and inland, are available from the house.

Nr Aldeburgh, Suffolk and the surrounding area

Aldeburgh is rapidly becoming the Salcombe of Suffolk. It’s a town of pastel-coloured houses, and the high street now has an organic food market, a couple of delis, a good bookshop, a cinema with an arthouse leaning, three excellent restaurants, a choice of pubs and various designer houseware/clothing/surf stores. However, it’s still loyal to its fishing heritage, and you can buy the day’s catch from several fishermen’s huts on the beach. There are also two decent-sized Co-Ops in town, and two very popular fish and chip shops, with queues down the street throughout the season.

This is Benjamin Britten territory, and Snape Maltings, home of his Aldeburgh Festival, is a 20-minute drive from the house. The Aldeburgh Festival is held throughout June, and the more informal Proms throughout August (www.Aldeburgh.co.uk). Within the old converted granaries are a contemporary bar and restaurant which opens for pre-concert meals, various retail outlets including a craft shop, house and garden shop and various antique outlets. A farmers’ market is held here on the first Saturday of each month.

You can walk from the house along the coast, either north towards Sizewell and on to Dunwich, Walberswick and Southwold or south to Aldeburgh. Leiston, a five minute drive away, has an excellent indoor swimming pool/sports centre and a cinema. Other local attractions include Minsmere Nature Reserve, Woodbridge, Orford and Tunstall Forest.
