Hope Farm House Barn

Barn location

Nr Alstonefield, Dovedale, Derbyshire, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

Waking up at Hope Farm House Barn makes you feel you have the world to yourself! This luxury self-catering house for two is in a beautifully romantic spot, with the breathtaking scenery of the Derbyshire Dales right on the doorstep. The farm and buildings date from the early 18th century and were unmodernised till the 1980s. The Barn was carefully converted in 2000, with all the original features intact.

Nothing has been renovated or hidden unless absolutely necessary, in order to retain the rustic style – but there’s no compromise on comfort. The barn oozes with character and, despite being so close to the well-trodden tourist trail in Dovedale, it is in an exceptionally pretty and tranquil location.

Location

This is the heart of the Derbyshire Dales. Guests are one mile from Dovedale, just outside the picturesque village of Alstonefield. A five minute walk in either direction will take you to a friendly, old-fashioned pub.

Accommodation

All the furnishings have been chosen to complement the simplicity of the old stone building. You’ll find country and antique furniture, old textiles and a collection of traditional farming and kitchen tools. The old stone flags have been lifted, levelled and replaced. A new oak beam was found for the sitting room, and other beams and stone sills have been cleaned.

The funny little windows and their original inside shutters have been repaired, and external window and door shutters have been replaced. The dining room and kitchen both lead out onto the sheltered stone yards where once the pigs slept in the afternoon sun – the old feeding troughs, mossy now, are still there. A path runs round the side through the croft to a private parking area.

All the rooms are on the ground floor. There is a sweet double bedroom with pine furniture, a double bed made at a local workshop and an en-suite shower room. The sitting room is equally cosy with a comfortable sofa and rugs. Then there’s a dining room and a kitchen. Guests have full central heating and a log stove. The kitchen continues the theme of white painted walls and old timber beams, with a heavy wooden door and a granite worktop.

Facilities

The barn has a TV/video player, a radio and a hairdryer. The kitchen has a microwave as well as a range-style cooker, a fridge, freezer and washing machine/tumble drier.

The owners do visit their farmhouse next door but rarely when guests are occupying the barn.

Dovedale, Derbyshire and the surrounding area

This is a land of valleys and rivers – The Dove, Manifold, Wye, Derwent and Dane are the best known, and each valley has its own personality. All offer a variety of walks, and a short drive will take you to the wild, high moors of the Dark Peak.

Dovedale, one mile away, provides a delightful gentle walk along the river or more energetic routes up the hillsides where cowslips and orchids dazzle in the spring. Drop down into the next valley, and you may find the Manifold river, which mysteriously disappears in places during the summer, but always returns in winter. The old market town of Ashbourne is only five miles away, with excellent food shops of all sorts as well as antiques, clothes shops and galleries.

The old High Peak rail tracks have made perfect cycle paths. You can hire bikes from Parsley Hay by the hour or day. Some of the great houses of England are here, too – Haddon, Chatsworth, Hardwick are the most famous. And each week from May till September, one of the villages in the area has a Wells Dressing Festival, an ancient ceremony of decorating the wells in thanksgiving for the clear springs.
