Priory Cottage

Cottage location

St Keverne, Helston, Cornwall, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

One of two cottages in the grounds of Tregoning, an 18th century farmhouse on the Lizard Peninsula. The ten acres of private grounds contain a stream, a small waterfall, an old clapper bridge and delightful woodland. This is the site of an old Cistercian Monastery, some ruins of which are still visible today.

Priory Cottage has been converted from a barn into a charming, upside down home from home, with thick walls, beams and deep window sills. The open plan living room/kitchen is on the first floor, reached by stone steps leading up to a stable door. The pale pine kitchen with pretty tiles is well equipped and the sitting/dining area has lovely views out over our garden and also down the wooded valley that leads to the sea. There is comfortable furniture arranged around a wood burning stove. Add in a TV and DVD player, an iPod dock, a CD player and a radio and it is the perfect space for collapsing in comfort with a bottle of wine and a book or film after an energetic day on the beach.

All the downstairs rooms overlook an enclosed patio, where there is garden furniture and a fire pit/BBQ for warm summer evenings.

St Keverne village is a few minutes' walk away. Here you'll find an organic restaurant, two pubs, a butcher, post office, newsagent, village store and a large church, all set around the square. There is a Tesco in Helston, 12 miles away, which can arrange online deliveries, as can the local Asda.

It is a mile and a half to the nearest shingle beach, and around 2.5 miles to the sands at Coverack.

Airport: Newquay (47 miles)

Stations: Truro (28 miles); Penzance (25 miles).

Accommodation

The décor is quirky and highly appealing, which could be why guests return here time and again.

The double bedroom has a 4’6” bed with a generous, king size duvet (ideal for those with partners who hog the lot!). The walls are painted in terracotta, and old pine furniture and interesting pictures give it lots of character. A door opens out on to the patio. There is a smart bathroom with a shower above the bath, under floor heating, bright Agatha Ruiz tiles and ample space for your own bits and pieces.

Facilities

Apart from those already mentioned, the house has all the usual kitchen gadgets, though please note there is no dishwasher. A selection of films, books and board games is supplied.

There are electric panel radiators throughout, and underfloor heating in the bathroom. The first basket of logs for the wood burner is provided; further baskets can be purchased from the owners. The cottage is a cosy winter retreat as well as a wonderful place to while a way a week or two during the summer months.
Up to two dogs are allowed, by arrangement.

Helston, Cornwall and the surrounding area

The Lizard Peninsula well deserves its status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lovely beaches, dramatic cliff walks and the romantic Helford River are all on offer, with historic houses and gardens, family attractions, art galleries and good restaurants within easy reach.

St. Ives, Penzance, Falmouth and the cathedral city of Truro are all under an hour away, as is St. Michael’s Mount. Cornwall has recently been designated a European Cultural Route of Parks, Gardens and Landscapes, its gardens home to some of the most unique plant collections in the world (Trebah and Glendurgan are just two of many).

Other attractions include The Tate gallery, the open air Minack Theatre perched on the cliffs at Porthcurno, The Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project, Flambards and the Seal Sanctuary. For those with energy to spare, the South West Coast Path runs all around the peninsula.
