Mole's Cottage Cottage location
St Keverne, Helston, Cornwall, England
Number of guests
Sleeps up to 2
Property description
Standing across a courtyard from Tregoning, an 18th century farmhouse on the Lizard Peninsula, Mole's Cottage was once a barn where the farm's daffodils were sorted. Today, it is a delightful, single storey cottage, sleeping two.
The interior is full of character with mellow stone walls, Cornish slate and exposed roof trusses. Furnished with old pine, hand painted furniture, a comfortable sofa, memory foam mattress and a wood burning stove to curl up in front of, and with fantastic walks and beaches on the doorstep, this is a rather idyllic, romantic hideaway.
Guests at Mole's Cottage have use of a large courtyard with garden furniture and a fire pit/BBQ as well as an interesting water feature, tree ferns and sculptures. Its flowerpots are a riot of colour in season, and a myriad of white fairy lights are strung up throughout December. You are also more than welcome to wander across the two fields and through the woodland - it all belongs to the owners who live in the farmhouse.
Location
Tregoning is built on the site of an old Cistercian Monastery, some ruins of which are still visible today. It is beautifully set in 10 acres of grounds which incorporate a stream, a small waterfall, an old clapper bridge and woodland. The nearest shingle beach is just over a mile away; the sandy beach at Coverack is around 2.5 miles.
St Keverne village is a few minutes' walk from the cottage. This is a particularly well-equipped village – around the square you'll find an organic restaurant, two pubs, a butcher, post office, newsagent, village store and a large church. The nearest supermarket is Tesco in Helston, 12 miles away, and there will be Sainsbury's from summer 2010. Online deliveries are available.
Airport: Newquay (47 miles)
Stations: Truro (28 miles); Penzance (25 miles).
Accommodation
Decorated in deep colours with lots of pictures and items of pottery etc, this is definitely not a cottage for lovers of minimalist, neutral shades. The bedroom is warm and inviting, with a 4’6” bed and a king size duvet (so no arguing about who has a cold back!). The room has an ensuite lobby (with hanging cupboard) and ensuite power shower room with plenty of space for lotions and potions.
Facilities
These include garden furniture, a fire pit/BBQ, iPod dock, CD/radio, TV/DVD player, films, books, board games and all the usual kitchen stuff. Please note that there is no dishwasher.
One dog is allowed, by arrangement.
Central heating is included during the winter. It is available at extra charge if required during the summer months.
Helston, Cornwall and the surrounding area
The Lizard Peninsula well deserves its status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Lovely beaches, dramatic cliff walks and the romantic Helford River are all on offer, and historic houses and gardens, family attractions, art galleries and good restaurants are all within easy reach.
St. Ives, Penzance, Falmouth and the cathedral city of Truro are all under an hour away, as is St. Michael’s Mount. Cornwall has recently been designated a European Cultural Route of Parks, Gardens and Landscapes, its gardens home to some of the most unique plant collections in the world (Trebah and Glendurgan are just two of many).
Other attractions include The Tate gallery, the open air Minack Theatre perched on the cliffs at Porthcurno, The Lost gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project, Flambards and the Seal Sanctuary. For those with energy to spare, the South West Coast Path runs all around the peninsula.
