Boot, Eskdale, Cumbria - The Lake District, England
Number of guests
Sleeps up to 2
Property description
This gorgeous little cottage for two lies beside the Whillan Beck and quaint Packhorse Bridge in Eskdale in The Lake Distrct. It has ancient oak beams, local pink granite stonework, an oak kitchen, a living/dining area, a period style bathroom and cosy furnishings. On the first floor is a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. The views of the garden and fell are wonderful, the ultimate antidote for tired city-dwellers!
Whillan Beck is one of a handful of gorgeous 400-year old Grade 2 listed cottages called Bridge End Farm Cottages. They are full of charm and character, and won the 2000 and 2002 Cumbria for Excellence and the Lake District Self-Catering Holiday of the Year awards. They were also twice winners of England for Excellence Silver Awards.
You have access to grounds of 3/4 of an acre with a delightful walled garden and a larger riverside paddock. Upon your arrival you will find your cottage warm, the bed made up, a welcome tray, fresh milk in the fridge and flowers from the garden (in season).
Location
No longer a working farm, Bridge End - as its name implies -has an idyllic setting at the end of a cobbled lane in the picturesque hamlet of Boot. The cottages stand beside a beautiful 17th Century packhorse bridge over the tumbling Whillan Beck. One of the Lake District's scenic hamlets, Boot sits beneath mighty Scafell. Despite having only some twenty to thirty residents, it has a church, post office, craft shop, corn mill museum and two traditional inns.
Accommodation
The general décor is of wooden beams, exposed stonework and rustic decoration. The living area is modern and piney, with a tiled floor, wooden table and chairs, a dishwasher and various mod cons.
Facilities
Whillan Beck has double glazing, full gas central heating, a powerful shower, a CD player/radio and a colour TV. Kitchen facilities include an oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer and dishwasher.
There is a barbecue and plenty of garden furniture, and a laundry room (shared between the cottages) with washing machine and tumble drier.
Sorry, no pets.
Eskdale, Cumbria - The Lake District and the surrounding area
This is an area of superlatives. Within the village is England's oldest working water mill. Within walking distance are Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain; its steepest road, Hardknott Pass; and its deepest lake, the dramatic Wastwater (a lovely walk from the cottage).
Close by you'll also find the 3,000 year old Bronze Age stone circles on the moor above Boot, the well preserved Hardknott Roman Fort and Stanley Ghyll waterfall, described by many as Lakeland's loveliest.
This is the heart of the Lake District National Park, so there are numerous other things to see and do, both indoor and out. You can hike up a different mountain each day right from your cottage door, and enjoy not having to use the car all week. There are also various outdoor activities including climbing, canoeing, abseiling, pony trekking and mountain biking.
If you are new to the Fells and mountains, the cottage owners can put you in touch with an experienced mountain guide. If you prefer a gentle after-dinner stroll with a local history slant , again you can be connected with the right person. The owners can highly recommend these guides as a way of getting to know and getting the best from this fantastic corner of England.
