The Luxury Studio

House location

Bretteville-sur-Laize, Caen, Normandy, France

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

A fabulously characterful and comfortable studio within the grounds of a large French manor house (Le Manoir de Cauvicourt) in Normandy. Built in mellow brick with pale blue shutters, it has its own private two-acre garden, a sun terrace, a barbecue and outdoor seating. It’s all utterly Gallic in character, surrounded by gorgeous gardens, very reasonably priced and only a short hop away across the Channel.

The grounds of the Manoir include a fully stocked vegetable garden (a full time gardener can bring produce straight to your table), an orchard and an ornamental fish pond.

Location

Ten minutes south of Caen, just outside the village of Bretteville-sur-Laize in Normandy. You approach through electric gates, up a long tree-lined drive to the main wrought iron gates of the Manoir.

This is a great base for visiting the famous Normandy beaches and historical Falaise. There are fabulous beaches up and down the coast for walks and long restaurant lunches. Bayeux is 30 minutes, Deauville 30 minutes, Paris just over two hours. You are also ideally placed for house-hunting, and the owners can offer advice on English-speaking agents and surveyors, ferry services etc.

Accommodation

The newly renovated Studio is a happy marriage of traditional French décor and antiques with contemporary fixtures and fittings. The kitchen is on the first floor, a magnificent room with wood-stripped floors and high vaulted ceilings, a new stainless steel 4-gas hob and electric oven, a microwave and an American-style fridge/freezer. There’s a table for four here. Also on the first floor is the living room, again with wooden floors and a vaulted ceiling. It’s a sweet and comfortable room with sofas and easy chairs looking out over the back garden, the courtyard, and the front grounds of the main Manoir and fountain.

The luxurious bedroom is on the ground floor, an L-shaped room with wood floors and views over the courtyard and sun terrace. It has a flat screen TV and DVD and a spacious ensuite dressing room/bathroom. There’s a big white double sunken bath, a separate shower cubicle and a white French antique double washbasin. The room leads through to a separate lavatory.

Facilities

These include English satellite TV, a DVD player and a library of films.

Prices are fully inclusive of all heating, towels and bed linen. There is a separate laundry room, convenient for all three properties (Le Manoir, Le Petit Manoir and The Luxury Studio), with two washing machines and two dryers.

There are no hidden charges.

Sorry, no pets or smoking allowed.

Caen, Normandy and the surrounding area

The village of Bretteville-sur-Laize is four minutes away, with excellent facilities including a newsagent, supermarket, baker, butcher, restaurants, cinema, pizzeria, beauty salon, hairdresser, horse-riding and fishing. Historical Falaise, birth place of William the Conqueror, is just 15 minutes away – there are lots of shops here and a lively Saturday market, well worth a visit.

Most beaches are about twenty minutes from Le Manoir. At Cabourg, for example, the magnificent Grand Hotel overlooks the beach, where there is a casino and an indoor pool open to non-residents.

A short walk across the green takes you to the intriguing French shops and wonderful cafes and restaurants, where you can sit outside until past dark!

There are lots of other beaches to explore (like Luc-sur-Mer and Arromanches), and various activities including beach yachts, sailing and horse-riding.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most famous attractions in the area, but there are lots of other things to see and do. The memorial for peace in Caen is both a moving and interesting visit, as are the museums of the landing beaches. The American War Cemetery is at Omaha beach and the Commonwealth War Cemetery at Bayeux.

Deauville is a cosmopolitan town, with wonderful designer shopping, casinos, and a thallassotherapy treatment centre. The beach here is beautiful, certainly rivalling the Cote d'Azur!
