Valletta G-House

House location

Valletta, Malta

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

Valletta G-House is a graceful period house within the walls of Valletta, a World Heritage City on the island of Malta. This house is a rare treasure, a 16th century holiday home that has been restored with love and attention to detail, fully equipped with all mod cons but with a real feeling of history and character. It is about as far removed from the blandness of hotels and normal holiday lets as you can get.

Valletta G-House has a large double bedroom with a traditional Maltese wooden balcony, a sitting/TV room, a fully equipped kitchen/dining room and a bathroom. Using the house as your base, you can discover the city built by the Knights of St John back in 1565, with its palaces, churches and interesting little shops.

Location

Within the walls of the World Heritage City, just by Fort St Elmo. Buses run from here to any town in Malta.

Accommodation

The house has lots of stripped stone walls, some antique furniture items and original artwork.

The bedroom is the largest room, where you'll find the fascinating Maltese wooden balcony overlooking the street. The atmosphere here is one of sumptuous luxury, with a queen-sized bed with large dark wood posts and a subtle hanging Knights’ cross tapestry. It’s all very romantic and comfortable, with plenty of attention to detail.

The walls in the sitting room have been taken back to the orginal warm Maltese limestone. This is a handsome room, with a large and dramatic piece of artwork above a solid wood bench. Here you can settle down with a cup of tea and watch cable TV or a DVD after a good meal out, perhaps, or an evening at the Manoel Theatre in town.

The niche/library contains books on Malta and other reading material. There’s also a sound system along with a choice of Maltese and classical music CDs.

Downstairs is what used to be the old cellar, a wonderfully cool room which today has been converted into a fabulous kitchen. It is a happy marriage of old, vaulted stonework and modern units, and has plenty of counter-top space for you to prepare meals, and various cabinets and drawers stocked with utensils. There is a hob, oven, country kitchen sink and fridge/freezer here, and a table seating four. On one side of the room there is a sealed well which, in the past, would have been shared between several households!

Facilities

You will arrive to find the house spotlessly clean, with a welcome pack of basic groceries and fresh bath and hand towels and fresh linen on the bed. Toiletries are also provided. If you stay for more than one week, the cleaner will also clean and change the linen after the first week. There is also a laundrette and dry cleaner close by.

Victor, a friend of the owner who keeps an eye on the house, will pick you up from the airport, and take you to the house. Do ask him if you need any information regarding the island – he will be thrilled to help you out. You will be given his mobile number to call him if there are any difficulties or emergencies.

The house has a telephone. Sorry, no pets and no smoking.

Valletta and the surrounding area

A holiday in Malta can take many guises. Visitors come here for the history, the archaeology, to learn English in a warmer country. They want to try out the Mediterranean cuisine and to enjoy the sun and sea. Some come out of interest for ecclesiastic art and, above all, the excellent examples of baroque architecture. Others have heard that it’s great for diving and sailing.

Staying in “the city built by gentlemen for gentlemen” adds value to the equation, making the experience one to remember. Away from the usual tourist resorts, Valletta G-House is in the heart of Maltese life and history. Valletta itself is built on a human scale, clustered in a tight grid of narrow streets behind grand fortifications. With its baroque architecture and floodlit bastions, numerous beautiful churches, palaces and lively people, it is a delightful city. Its slightly faded glory and its Grand Harbour are memorable. Everything is within walking distance and, as we all know, there is no better way to see and experience a city than on foot.
