Tom's Barn

Barn location

Parwich, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England

Number of guests

Sleeps up to 2

Property description

The visitor book in this 18th century limestone barn says it all:

“Tom’s Barn really does have the ‘wow’ factor 110%, and luxury, luxury, luxury: perfect setting, lovely greeting, stargazer lilies, classical music and a tea tray with flapjack! See you in the future.”

Tom’s Barn is a romantic cottage for couples of all ages, somewhere you can switch off and totally relax. It stands with Douglas’s Barn as part of Orchard Farm, right in the Peak District National Park, with magnificent walks and scenery on the doorstep, as well as great pubs and farm shops. The owners, John and Marion, live next door, and are there if and when needed, but will never intrude. Everything will be sparkling clean, warm, welcoming and waiting for you when you arrive, right down to the welcoming tray of something freshly homemade! Babies and dogs are welcome too.

Please note that from April to the end of September, only weekly bookings can be made (although weekends are sometimes available at short notice). At all other times, weekends can be booked in advance. Please contact the owner (below) or find full availability details on the owner’s own website (link below).

Location

Facing south on the edge of the attractive Peak District village of Parwich, seven miles north of Ashbourne. The barn is surprisingly accessible from London and other major cities. There are wonderful walks right from the door, yet it is still only a few minutes’ stroll into the heart of the village with its shop, pub, church, tennis courts, bowling green and bus stop.

Accommodation

The outside of the barn does not do justice to it, and guests’ first impressions once inside are always favourable. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the sitting room exposed to the rafters may not be unique but it’s impressive, with the owners’ Australian son-in-law’s paintings high up on the walls.

The house is painted cream throughout. It is attractively lit, extremely comfortably furnished and generously equipped. It is more farmhouse than minimalist, with some antiques and some Ikea, but it’s all tasteful and there are definitely no fancy drapes or bed furnishings!

The galleried bedroom has a king sized bed, pine floors with rugs, a heated towel rail, a wall-mounted TV and an ensuite bathroom which has a deep, two-seater whirlpool bath. There are two west-facing roof lights, and a very large south-facing window – with wooden shutters – in the far gable end.

The log burner in the living room comes with unlimited wood.

Facilities

These include a fully equipped farmhouse kitchen with a two-oven electric fan cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washer-dryer etc. There are two TVs, a mini hi-fi/radio/CD player, wireless Internet access, a telephone (with honesty box), books, maps and games. The owners can lend you bikes and tennis racquets. All basic household ingredients (olive oil, salt etc) and cleaning materials are provided.

Well-behaved pets are welcome by prior arrangement (£15 per pet). If you happen to love riding you can even bring your horse and find stabling and grazing arranged for you on a nearby farm.

Please note that Tom’s Barn is not suitable for mobile babies or adults with mobility problems.

Ashbourne, Derbyshire and the surrounding area

You will find plenty of information on the area provided in the barn. There are many things to do in the Peak District National Park, including beautiful country houses to visit (Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Tissington Hall, Keddleston …) and such popular beauty spots as Dovedale, Carsington Water, Manifold Valley, and High Peak.

You can shop for wonderful foods at Farmers’ Markets, Chatsworth farm shop and other specialist food stores, and hunt for interesting items in antique shops, bookshops and factory shops. Buxton is famous for its opera house and annual festival; Bakewell for its pudding.

At Tom’s Barn you’ll have wonderful walks right from the door, and excellent places to eat and drink within easy reach. Guests really do seem to find it remarkably easy to switch offf and totally relax here. What more could one ask?
