Douglas's Barn Barn location
Parwich, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, England
Number of guests
Sleeps up to 2
Property description
A warmly welcoming, converted limestone barn for two, which provides calm and contemporary comfort within its oddly-shaped and quirkily-angled walls. This is definitely a five star house, generously equipped and furnished in predominantly leather, glass and stainless steel.
The colour scheme downstairs is a calming Derbyshire blue/grey/green. Walls throughout are painted in Farrow and Ball Matchstick, and the woodwork in Buff. There are original paintings by local artists in the kitchen, while a somewhat more vibrant African element – paintings and snatches of magenta – sneak in upstairs.
The house stands with Tom's Barn as part of Orchard Farm, right in the Peak District National Park, with magnificent walks and scenery on the doorstep, as well as great pubs and farm shops. The owners, John and Marion, live next door, and are there if and when needed, but will never intrude. Everything will be sparkling clean, warm, welcoming and waiting for you when you arrive, right down to the welcoming tray of something freshly homemade!
Please note that from April to the end of September, only weekly bookings can be made (although weekends are sometimes available at short notice). At all other times, weekends can be booked in advance. Please contact the owner (below) or find full availability details on the owner’s own website (link below).
Location
Next to the owners’ house, facing south on the edge of the attractive Peak District village of Parwich, seven miles north of Ashbourne. There are wonderful walks right from the door, yet it is still only a few minutes’ stroll into the heart of the village with its shop, pub, church, tennis courts, crown bowling green and bus stop.
Accommodation
The overall décor is tasteful 21st century but with a huge emphasis on comfort. The bedroom, at the top of a wrought iron, spiral staircase, is spacious and light. It has a super king size bed complete with a soft, feather and down topper, an antique rocking chair and generous storage space. The ensuite bathroom has a whirlpool bath with a power shower and is attractively tiled.
Downstairs, the painted kitchen is beautifully equipped, with a top of the range electric cooker and a great selection of kitchen implements just waiting to be appreciated by an enthusiastic cook. The cooker, fridge and dishwasher are all stainless steel and top quality. (The automatic washer and dryer are discreetly hidden behind cupboard doors.) There is a small round white table with four rather fun, and surprisingly comfortable, see-through chairs.
The sitting room has a modern leather sofa, flat screen TV, glass occasional tables and a remote control, hole-in-the-wall electric ‘fire’.
Facilities
You couldn’t ask for more. The kitchen has an electric fan cooker with rotisserie, a microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washer, dryer, toaster, kettle etc. Elsewhere in the house there are two TVs, a mini hi-fi with radio/CD player, wireless Internet access, a telephone (with honesty box), books, maps and games. The owners can lend you bikes and tennis racquets, and if you happen to love riding, stabling and grazing can be arranged for your horse on a nearby farm!
All basic household ingredients such as tea, coffee, rice, spices, olive oil etc are provided, as are basic cleaning materials.
Sorry, no pets allowed. And please note that the house is not suitable for adults who cannot cope with spiral stairs.
Ashbourne, Derbyshire and the surrounding area
You will find plenty of information on the area provided in the barn. There are many things to do in the Peak District National Park, including beautiful country houses to visit (Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, Tissington Hall, Keddleston …) and such popular beauty spots as Dovedale, Carsington Water, Manifold Valley, and High Peak. You can shop for wonderful foods at Farmers’ Markets, Chatsworth Farm Shop and other specialist food stores, and hunt for interesting items in antique shops, bookshops and factory shops. Buxton is famous for its opera house, well dressings and annual festival; Bakewell for its pudding.
One of the best things about Douglas’s Barn, apart from helping you quickly forget that the rest of the world exists, is the wonderful walks right from the door, and excellent places to eat and drink within easy reach.
