Property description
A very affordable, self-catering chalet for two, which previous guests have described as, quite literally, heavenly. This could be something to do with its position, being just above the clouds at 1420 metres! The views are spectacular, looking across terraced slopes, which in summer are richly green. There’s cross country skiing from the snow-laden doorstep, some wonderful walks year round (often following those langlauf trails) and access to numerous downhill ski resorts, all less than an hour away.
The chalet is in the Alpine village of Montpascal, (the other side of the peaks from Courcheval) which is so close to the Italian border you can take regular daytrips to Italian cities from here. One day you could be shopping in Turin, the next skiing the black slopes of Val Thorens!
Location
In the village of Montpascal, which has one restaurant but no shops. St Jean de Maurienne is a historic market town with plenty of shops and fast train connections to Italy and France (the Milan express stops once a day, and connecting trains or TGV hourly). Car hire from the station can be purchased with a rail ticket.
Airports: Chambery (1hr), Grenoble, Lyon, Geneva, Turin.
About 7 hours’ drive from Calais. TGV from Paris 3 ½ hours.
Accommodation
This chalet is for lovers of traditional country style, not for those seeking contemporary gizmos and minimalist lines. It is housed within a 17th century wood and stone village house and is simple and blissfully cosy, with a huge fireplace to warm dinners on or sit beside (firewood is supplied). The chalet is centrally heated too. Candles and a CD player add all the necessary ingredients for a romantic meal. On hot summer days you can sunbathe out on the terrace and enjoy the glorious views.
The double bedroom has a shower and handbasin and in the dressing room there is a spare bed and another shower so that two people can sleep separately if need be. By longstanding tradition, there is one loo adjacent to the kitchen.
Facilities
The open plan kitchen is well-equipped with an electric cooker, microwave, toaster, coffee machine, electric jug, so more than one needs for a simple life. Linen is included.
Snow shoes are provided in the house, as there’s always snow on the Grand Coin peak above the village.
Pets are welcome.
Montpascal, St Jean de Maurienne and the surrounding area
The road to the village was only made after the middle of the last century, and you can still see the signs of self-sufficient mountain life.
St Jean de Maurienne has various shops including a magnificent cheese shop in the old part of town. There is a huge swimming complex here too.
Val Thorens is accessed from Orelle – it takes 45 minutes to get there, most of which is the descent from the village.
