Escape from reality for a few days in this gorgeous windmill villa in Santorini. Based in one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands, The Windmill is the creation of Nestor and Fotini Levitis, who have taken all the most seductive elements of Cycladic architecture (white washed exterior, Mediterranean-coloured shutters, shady poolside pergola and illuminated swimming pool) and created an incredibly romantic and sophisticated holiday base for two.
“Dear Nestor and family”, reads one entry in the guest book. “I wanted to say thank you so much for our wonderful honeymoon in the Windmill. It was so relaxing and we felt as though we were living in our own world. Next time, we'll bring two friends to live in the second bedroom! The lighting is the highlight of the windmill. With so many lights - spotlights, wall lights, pool lights, candle holders - it looks just magical in the evenings.”
The Windmill is surrounded by sloping, sunbaked hillsides, terraced vineyards, olive trees and wide, open skies with panoramic views from every window over the bright blue Aegean sea. You have your own garden of seasonal vegetables where you can help yourself to figs, tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers and other ingredients for a healthy Mediterranean meal.
Nestor and Fotini’s windmill is nearby, but you will enjoy complete seclusion, peace and privacy. Relax, read, swim, walk down to the beach or explore the island. This is the kind of place you come for a short break and wish you could stay forever!
Location
The windmill is situated between the capital (Fira, 4.5kms) and the very beautiful, traditional settlement of Oia (7kms). You can hire a car at Fira airport.
The nearest mini market is 2.5 kms away but there are much bigger supermarkets in Fira.
Accommodation
Inside, The Windmill is sunny and bright, painted in cool restful colours and with not a corner in sight! Those keen on feng-shui will find its circular structure a positive force.
There is basically one large room on each floor, beginning with an open plan living/dining/kitchen area on the ground floor. It has pale wooden furniture, a dining table, country style cushions, and pale green painted wooden kitchen units and shutters at the windows.
A staircase follows the mill’s round walls to the first-floor bedroom which has lilac-coloured walls and pink touches, sprigs of flowers on the table, an inbuilt double bed and a pretty bathroom. If you sleep in this bedroom, don't forget to leave one of the shutters open so that you can watch the sunrise from your bed.
However, you are more likely to sleep in the top, cone-shaped bedroom, a really special light blue space with a double bed, a couch, an ensuite bathroom and wonderful views over the islands of Ios, Naxos, Amorgos and Anafi.
Facilities
The Windmill is beautifully equipped, from the dishwasher and espresso coffee maker in the kitchen to the satellite TV, CD/DVD player, radio, telephone and internet access in the living area. Feather pillows, slippers, bath towels and “Korres” beauty products are all provided. The house is air conditioned throughout, both hot and cold air.
Cleaning is offered once a week, and towels are changed twice a week. Free transfer to and from the airport or port is included in the holiday price. Complimentary wine and fruit are provided on arrival.
Additional services, available at extra charge, include extra cleaning, a chef and an on-site masseur.
The kidney bean-shaped swimming pool is not huge but enough for gentle swims and jacuzzi-style hydro-massages. There is a table, chairs and a cushioned area under the pergola where you can eat outside throughout the summer, and a poolside shower room.
Imerovigli, Santorini and the surrounding area
Nestor and Fotini are always available to provide you with information about the island. Most guests spend time on the beach, small and sandy, 800 metres from the mill, with a small taverna serving fresh fish lunches. Elsewhere you can go snorkelling, kite surfing, cycling, horse riding, take a boat trip to a volcano or neighbouring islands, and book a sunset supper cruise to Santorini’s famous Caldera cliff.
