Location

In the town of Cospicua, in the heart of Malta’s historic Three Cities area, where the Knights lived when they came to Malta.

Airport: Malta (10 minutes)

There is a good bus service (ten minutes off peak) and boat taxi (10 mins) to Valletta. From there you can easily travel anywhere on the island.

Accommodation

Amazingly, even though it only sleeps two, the house is spread over five levels, all joined by a magnificent stone staircase. From a rather grand entrance hall you can descend to a vaulted cellar. Tucked under the staircase here is a modern shower room, in a mix of stone and marble. The double bedroom with its balcony is on the first floor. It has a king size bed and a roomy antique wardrobe. Continue up to the kitchen/living area, again with its own balcony. And finally up to the top to a glorious terrace where you’ll have uninterrupted views over the Church of Immaculate Conception and the Grand Harbour.

Large windows lend a light and airy feel to the living area, and double doors lead to a balcony. The honey-coloured stone walls and ancient oak beams make it a perfect space for chilling out. The adjacent kitchen is full-on modern with a Vitroceramic hob, Smeg oven and a huge fridge/freezer, its cupboards well-stocked with dishes and utensils. You can enjoy romantic meals a deux at a round, antique dining table in the living area or outside in the sunshine on the terrace.

Facilities

Digital TV, a DVD player, a telephone and internet connection keep you in touch with the outside world.

The shower is supplied with solar hot water. Further facilities include towels (including a beach towel), a washing machine, a tumble dryer, iron, a portable air conditioning unit and a basic welcome grocery pack.

One thing guests should be aware of is that the church bells opposite the bedroom ring every quarter of an hour. The doors to the bedroom balcony have double glazing and thick shutters, but you do hear them. If you are a problem sleeper, you may like to bring earplugs.

Cospicua and the surrounding area

When the knights arrived in Malta in 1530 they made their home in Vittoriosa and started to build their auberges and defenses. The protected harbour was a perfect haven for their ships and galleys. By 1550, Senglea had been fortified and Cospicua was booming as a market town.

Wandering around the winding streets you take a step back in time. There are various historic sites, among them Fort St Angelo, the Inquisitors’ Palace, the Maritime Museum, the Malta at War Museum and numerous churches.

The area has benefited from recent investment, both foreign and local, and now boasts a world class yacht marina and a casino. Excellent bars and restaurants are mushrooming. There is a small antiques market in Kalkara on Saturdays (within walking distance), and a big market in Valletta every Sunday.

The beach and resort of Marsascala is three miles away. You’re also close to the fishing village of Marsaslokk. Sliema is accessible by boat and you can book a cruise of the harbour.
