At a glance

  • A delightfully quirky 1890's Victorian cottage that wears its history for all to see
  • A stone’s throw from the literary town of Hay-on-Wye
  • Walk, ride or drive through the dramatic scenery of the Welsh border
Property code: BN226

Situated a short distance north of Hay-on-Wye, this characterful former gatehouse provides a great base for exploring the ‘town of books’, the River Wye and the borderland of England and Wales.

At just 0.5 miles from the centre of Hay-on-Wye and the River Wye, this early Victorian lodge offers something for everyone. You might choose to explore the second-hand and antiquarian bookshops, boutiques, antique shops and art galleries in the town, before dining in one of the local eateries or enjoying a picnic by the river. Alternatively, you might prefer to burn a little more energy and hire a canoe or take to your bike, or perhaps make the short journey south to The Black Mountains, or the 15-mile trip to Brecon, your gateway to miles of mountain trekking and cycling among the peaks of the Brecon Beacons.

Now over 200 years old, this slightly quirky old cottage has lots of delightful period features including flagstone floors, oak beams, oak doors and floorboards. In places there is low headroom and despite being set on one level there are a couple of steps up into the bedrooms, which might not suit guests with limited mobility. Featuring a separate kitchen, dining room and living room, the lodge comfortably accommodates four guests, with a wood burner in the living room for cosy nights in and patio doors in the dining room that open up onto a sunny terrace on warmer days. The bathroom features both a bath and electric shower, depending on your preference, and a choice of two elegantly styled bedrooms – one king-size and one twin.

The lodge is situated in a large garden with a lawn area and terrace with garden furniture. The terrace is a wonderful spot to quietly sit on sunny days, admiring the views up the hill or down the valley to Hay-on-Wye, or to wind down in the evening after a day of exploration. Don’t forget to bring your BBQ!

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 king-size, 1 twin (Please note there is a door to access the twin bedroom from the king-size bedroom, but this is partially blocked off as it is not used. No access able from twin into king-size bedroom as the latch has been removed)
  • Bathroom with electric shower over the bath
  • Electric oven, induction hob, microwave dishwasher, fridge, freezer, washer/dryer
  • Wood burner with first basket of logs provided but only in the Winter months
  • Sky TV, DVD
  • Please note we do not supply a starter pack of essentials but there is a well-stocked Co-op within 5 minutes walk for your provisions
  • Large garden and terrace with garden furniture - not enclosed
  • 2 dogs welcome - the garden is edged by fields which at time can contain sheep so dogs must be supervised at all times
  • Cats not allowed
  • In places there is low headroom and some uneven, sometimes creaky floors and steps so the property may not be suitable for guests with limited mobilty
  • 0.25 miles to nearest shop; 0.5 miles to Hay-on-Wye; 16 miles to Brecon; 20 miles to Hereford
  • Ample parking for 2 cars available
  • This property will be decorated for Christmas
  • Arrival: 15:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details
  • 2 dogs allowed. Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week
  • There is an Accidental Damage Deposit of £200 when booking at this property, however this may be waived for £25. We’ll provide more details about this when booking your holiday.

We spent a great week at this beautiful cottage. The location was perfect and the cottage was comfy and well equipped. I loved the old world charm of this cottage and the fact we could walk out into fields was great, something the dogs loved. A short walk to town and the river, but comfy to stay in on rainy days. Thank you

The cottage is well located and an easy walk into the town. The co op is just across the road, as is the luck 7 brewery. A really delightful cottage, full of character and in a lovely spot. Next to the cottage is an avenue of oak trees that used to lead to the big gothic house the lodge was the gatehouse for (sadly long since demolished). The town itself is lovely too - full of book, antique and gift shops, cafes and a castle. Would recommend. Hide

This was a perfect location for us. Very peaceful, apparently remote, yet close to a supermarket and within walking distance of 20 bookshops.

Another wonderful stay at Lower Moor Lodge. Such a lovely place to retreat to. Beds were incredibly comfortable. The garden is lovely and although just on the outskirts of Hay it feels completely remote. For meals out, We recommend trying the burgers at The Globe at Hay.
