  • A cute and cosy off-grid barn set in an isolated hillside location
  • Unrivalled views across the beautiful Black Mountains
  • Dramatic night skies from your private terrace
Property code: 48085

A beautiful artistic off-grid hideaway in the heart of the hills. Perched high on the slopes of the Black Mountains in the midst of the Brecon Beacons National Park, enjoy breath-taking views and dramatic night skies from the terrace, or stride out for endless trails through bluebell woods and ancient meadows.

Crickhowell is just ten minutes’ drive away with local traders, a handy mountaineering shop, pubs and plenty of coffee shops. Abergavenny, of Food Festival fame is ten minutes in the other direction, a thriving market town forming the heart of Wales foodie revolution. Cathedral towns of Brecon and Hereford are also within easy reach, as well as Wales Industrial Heritage sites in Blaenavon. Nearby attractions include beautiful walks directly in to the Black Mountains and Sugar Loaf Mountain, cycle hire available with National cycle routes and mountain biking centres throughout the area. Pony trekking throughout the nearby Llanthony Valley, fishing on the River Usk, canoeing on the River Wye and high wire and zip wire adventures at Llangorse Lake.

With a quirky and original layout, Hillside Barn is the perfect cottage for a couple or family looking for something a little bit different. The living room has patio doors leading out to the garden with BBQ table and chairs and incredible countryside views. With wood burner, (first basket of logs included), comfortable sofas TV along with its open plan kitchen/ dining area with gas oven and hob, fridge, dining table and chairs. Both bedrooms are accessed via external steps with romantic fairy lights guiding your way. There is one double which leads onto the twin bedroom with additional single bed, sleeping a total of 5. Please note the only WC is located downstairs and must be accessed by going outside and then re-entering on the ground floor. For this reason we do not recommend the property for anyone with any mobility issues or very small children. Downstairs is the shower room with WC.

Outside is the stunning terrace area with garden furniture and BBQ, woodland, and also the wind turbine and solar panels, the natural spring, and log stores. There is a rustic wood fired sauna, which is shared with the sister property which can be found lower down the hillside and is completely separate and private.

Please note that the property is Off-Grid and it is particularly well-suited for guests interested in reducing their environmental footprint and using resources sparingly. The water is from the spring, power from wind and sun, heat from logs, and the Wi-Fi is (unlimited) 4G. Fossil fuel support (for when eco-equilibrium proves challenging) is present in the form of a diesel generator and gas-fired radiators.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 triple (both reached via external steps)
  • 1 bathroom – 1 shower room with WC (accessed via external steps from the bedrooms)
  • TV
  • Wood burner
  • Radiators for occasional use are available
  • Cot and highchair available on request
  • Terrace area and garden, plus guests can explore the private woodland and glade
  • Dry storage available for bikes
  • Shared wood-fired sauna with Hammam towels and outdoor shower (shared with neighbouring cottage)
  • Children to take care with external steps
  • Regret no washing machine
  • Please keep dogs off the furniture
  • The cottage is accessed via a steep driveway
  • Please note that this is an eco-retreat, so we ask that you avoid excess water usage and turn off taps when not in use. To avoid burning diesel unnecessarily, please turn off lights when leaving rooms empty and avoid leaving gas radiators on when not in the room
  • Shops, pubs and restaurants 3 miles
  • Arrival: 16:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00, unless otherwise stated in your arrival details
  • 2 dogs allowed. Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week
  • There is an Accidental Damage Deposit of £200 when booking at this property, however this may be waived for £25. We’ll provide more details about this when booking your holiday.

Lovely quiet spot to get away from it all. Short car ride to nearby town of Crickhowell, and great walks straight from the barn. A great spot to base ourselves for our first trip to the Black Mountains.

This is a beautiful cottage in a lovely remote area and we had a fantastic time however it is very Eco and that means all utilities are subject to weather conditions which if you enjoy an adventure is fine but if you love your home comforts you may find the cottage challenging . Lovely remote barn with cute separate bedroom upstairs. It was lovely to drink spring water and experience no light pollution. The walks up the hill were lovely too. Enclosed garden was handy to safely let the dog out. Beautiful views, even in the fog.

Lovely and tranquil, beautiful views, excellent and idyllic location. Note offgrid really means this, so don't expect supermarket deliveries or great mobile signal. 3miles to local shops, 4x4 ideal but not necessary. Would definitely recommend for a romantic weekend. Not suitable for wheelchair or those with mobility issues.

Very secluded cottage, isolated and peaceful. Great mountains to walk and views are spectacular. If you go when its rainy make sure you have good grip on your tyres as driveway can be a little tricky! Fully equipped and some great old books to look at and absolutely loved the big map of the area on the living room wall. The piano was great too. A wonderful spot with loads of character! Brilliant location for cycling and hiking - didn't need to get into the car once after we arrived. The roads around are really quiet, the house is comfortable, and there is a nice sense of ease with nature whilst there.
