2.5 miles from the beach and surrounded by the North York Moors' forests and dales, you won't have far to go to uncover the vast array of natural gems nearby. 8 miles away, a visit to Mallyan Spout waterfall is a must. The tallest waterfall in the North Yorkshire Moors, it can be enjoyed as part of a 3-mile route starting and finishing in Goathland village. Upon your return, nip into one of the village's pub for a tipple and hot meal. Closer to home, Newholm is just over 2 miles away from Whitby, there are a large number of shops, eateries and bars.

Once home of the editor of Vogue, this 17th-century country house boasts infinite style. With a real eye for detail, each room has been lovingly pieced together and finished with luxurious furnishings and classy decor. Starting your tour in the spacious lounge, you are met with a bright and airy space with a clean, contemporary feel. With light pouring in from outside, the lounge invites rest and relaxation throughout the day, whether you are listening to the gentle melody of birdsong through the open windows or are curled up in the evening in front of the wood burner. For added entertainment, there is also a large TV with DVD player. Heading into the kitchen, the bright themes continue. Calming tones and plenty of space make lunch and dinner preparations a pleasure. Equipped with all sorts of crockery and utensils, as well as an oven with electric hob, you needn't worry about packing everything and the kitchen sink! For a choice of mealtime settings, take a seat around the kitchen's cute dining table or, if you fancy more of an occasion, choose the formal dining room with double aspect views of the gardens outside. On the other side of the kitchen, a warm double bedroom is a luxurious space to rest your head – and of course, provides great access to your morning coffee! Also, downstairs is a bathroom with WC and walk-in shower. Up the beach hut-style staircase, the master bedroom can be found. Taking pride of place across the whole floor, this bedroom with en-suite bathroom is truly superb. With gorgeous apex ceiling, fantastic views over the garden and coast beyond and charming interiors, a few lie-ins will definitely be on the cards. Next to the bedroom, the en-suite has a lovely roll-top bath and is complete with complimentary toiletries.

With over half an acre of award-winning gardens, the property's gardens are a joy to explore. Rest a spell in the rose garden, before taking your lunch alfresco on the patio. Home to a pretty summer house, you can put your feet up with a good book or drift off to sleep for a well-deserved afternoon nap.

We had a great time at the Retreat in August, lovely cottage and huge garden and a fabulous location. Very peaceful and secluded spot but with easy access to Whitby and all of north Yorks. Definitely recommend the park and ride into Whitby to take the hassle out of parking in town.

Absolutely stunning cottage in a great location. Everything you need is provided, although you do need shampoo etc as the only toiletries provided is small bars of soap. The gardens are stunning with their own apple trees and it isn't too far from Whitby or Sandsend, Runswick Bay just further up too. Will definitely return.
